BMW or Ford timing chain or wet belt work in Reigate? We’re the Surrey/Sussex border timing chain specialist, 12 miles south of Reigate town centre. We see more BMW chain work coming out of the Reigate area than almost anywhere else we cover — there’s a high concentration of premium German cars in RH2 and the surrounding villages, and a high concentration of motorway-heavy commuter mileage too.
Why so many Reigate BMW owners come to us
The Reigate commute — into London, out to Gatwick, or across to Heathrow — racks up motorway miles fast. That’s exactly the use pattern that exposes BMW N47, N57 and B47 timing chain weakness. A chain that would last 200,000 miles on a stop-start city pattern can be rattling on cold start by 80,000 motorway miles. Add in the fact that main-dealer quotes for an N47 chain job often start north of £2,500, and it’s easy to see why Reigate owners look for a specialist independent alternative.
Reigate vehicles we replace timing chains on
- BMW 320d / 330d (E90, F30, G20) — N47, N57, B47 chain stretch.
- BMW 520d / 530d (F10, G30) — same engine families, same wear pattern.
- BMW X1 / X3 / X5 (N47, N57) — common in the Reigate / Redhill catchment.
- BMW 1 Series (F20, F40) — N47/B47, often catches second owners by surprise.
- Ford Kuga 1.5/2.0 EcoBlue — wet belt, increasingly common as private buys.
- Ford Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue — local trades vans, wet belt at high mileage.
- Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost — wet belt at 10 years, regardless of mileage.
Free collection from Reigate
It’s a 25-minute run from us to Reigate on a good day, longer in school traffic — but we cover Reigate (RH2) free of charge for collection and return, just as we do for the rest of our 15-mile radius. That includes Reigate Hill, Wray Common, South Park, Earlswood, Woodhatch, Meadvale, and out to Buckland and Betchworth. If your car is undriveable, we’ll bring our trailer.
What to do if you suspect a problem
If your BMW is rattling on cold start, throwing a 2A87, 2A86 or 2AAF fault code, or losing power on the motorway, stop driving it. A stretched chain can jump teeth and the resulting valve-to-piston contact will write the engine off. The same logic applies to Ford EcoBoost and EcoBlue wet belts — once the belt starts shedding rubber into the oil, the clock is ticking on the oil pump.
Call us first, on 01342 643 780. We’ll talk you through what we’d expect to find on your specific engine, give you an indicative price range, and arrange free collection. Or use our free estimate form — typically a same-day response.
BMW chain vs Ford wet belt — what’s involved
BMW N47/B47 chains live at the rear of the engine, against the bulkhead. The gearbox has to come out to access them. That’s the bulk of the labour. Done in a specialist workshop with the right tools, it’s a one-day job; in a generalist garage seeing it for the first time, it can easily run to three.
Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt jobs are simpler — but require the timing cover off, the sump dropped to inspect for debris, and a careful re-timing using OEM locking tools. Pattern parts will not do, no matter what your local motor factor tells you.
Either way, we have the tools, the experience, and the patience to do the job right. See our dedicated pages for BMW timing chain and Ford wet belt work.
